I am going to be shameless and ask you all for money to donate towards the Kokoda Challenge that myself and 3 team mates are doing on 14th/15th July. It is a non stop 96km hike through the Gold Coast Hinterland that will both mentally and physically challenge us. Any donation will be gratefully received - proceeds go to supporting youth programs around Australia (and we need to raise $1600 as a team) Please go to https://kokodachallenge.com/donate-online . You will be asked which team you would like to donate to - we are called Mummy Time. All donations above $2 are tax deductible. The lengths we will go to get some peace and quiet! Thank you!

Our lovely friend Lisa Spencer from Laser Clinics Australia at Runaway Bay has pledged to donate an extra $5, $10 or $15 depending on numbers for anyone who gets a laser hair removal treatment before May 30th. Just mention the Kokoda Challenge - they have some great offers on so go and see LCA today!

When applying for a position, you always try to put your best foot forward and highlight the advantages you offer to the prospective employer above the other applicants.  Sometimes just having the right experience isn’t enough and they are looking for something more.

In situations like these, having extra qualifications and skills that compliment your role and give the interviewer an extra incentive to hire you, can be the difference between getting a call back or a ‘Thank you for applying’ email.

Completing a registered First Aid course with a qualified training company is an excellent skill that you can very easily add to your resume.  The benefit of completing a First Aid course is that you are showing a potential employer initiative that you are willing and able to look after yourself and those around you.

There is also the extra advantage that you can use your First Aid skills both inside and outside of the office if need be.

First Aid Accident and Emergency at Varsity Lakes provide free CPR courses as well as fully registered First Aid courses including specific skill sets for specific industries and trades.

Here at Fiona Watson Recruitment, we work closely with our applicants and our clients to ensure that the experience, personality and skill-set works for both parties.   We want to give everyone the best opportunity to succeed and upskilling is a productive way to make your application stand out from the crowd.

If you are interested in attending a First Aid course with First Aid Accident and Emergency, contact their head office for more information: https://www.firstaidae.com.au/contact/

Youtube, Snapchat, Facetime, Skype, Zoom, Instagram stories – it’s clear that video is transforming the way we express ourselves and communicate with friends and colleagues.

Video is now routine and has started taking hold in the job application process as well. Why? Because you’re hiring a real person. Soft skills, such as communication and character are a lot harder to gauge via CV, even for experienced recruiters and hiring managers.

Fiona Watson Recruitment, along with our amazing database JobAdder now have video cover letter capability. What better way to sell yourself and get that foot in the door to your next career move?

How to create an effective cover letter?

Think of your video cover letter as a “movie trailer”, and your career as a movie. Make it exciting, memorable and give just enough information to really interest the recruiter or hiring manager.

Here are some tips to help you create an effective video cover letter:

  1. Keep it short, video cover letters shouldn’t’ exceed 60 seconds.
  2. Start with a quick intro of your name and the position you’re applying for.
  3. Show your personality (while keeping things professional) – try to emulate how you would speak to someone in person.
  4. Be mindful of your filming environment – relatively quiet spaces with good lighting help to convey the right message (whilst a dark room can convey the opposite!).
  5. List a few key reasons for why you’re interested in the role/company.
  6. Highlight your top skills, background and education relevant to the role.
  7. Finish strong by thanking the recruiter or hiring manager for taking the time to review your application.

All of our job adverts on the FWR website, SEEK, Indeed and JobRapido will now be video cover letter enabled. We look forward to 'seeing' you soon!
